I am offended by the recent attacks by the CasinosNO! against state Rep. Deborah Simpson of Auburn and feel compelled to write. To accuse Rep. Simpson of being unethical is both ludicrous and disingenuous.
CasinosNO! criticized Rep. Simpson of being unethical in connection with her appearance in a television ad supporting Question 3 on the November ballot, which asks Maine voters whether they want to allow a casino resort.
This is an issue on which many communities and groups are divided in their opinion, including legislative Democrats.
Challenging the opposition in any political campaign is to be expected. But accusing an individual of unethical behavior because they hold a strong opinion and express it openly and honestly is a cheap shot and should never be part of the political process. Expressing one’s opinion and speaking forcefully in public debate is, in fact, at the very core of the democratic process, and at the center of our political system and the freedoms that separate it from others.
Auburn is well represented by Rep. Simpson, especially because she speaks up on behalf of her constituents and is always forthcoming with her personal views.
On every issue Deb has taken up in the Legislature – even when I disagree with her – she has been articulate and reasoned. I am confident that is the way she is conducting herself in this campaign – with passion and with integrity.
