This is in response to Danielle Taylor’s letter to the editor (Oct. 24). As a junior at Lewiston High School, I was shocked to hear such judgmental comments coming from a 12 year old.
Lewiston High School is a very diverse community in terms of race, religion and sexual orientation. Myself, along with many of my peers, appreciate this diversity. One’s character and integrity is not about his/her sexual orientation, as Danielle would have us believe. Her statement that gay people “choose to live the lifestyle” is wrong. People do not “choose” to be gay; it is determined by genetics, just like an individual’s eye or hair color. It has been estimated that one in every 10 people is gay. The religious belief that “God created Adam and Eve” has nothing to do with it.
As a society, we can make a choice. We can choose not accept people for who they are, or we can choose to respect others and appreciate them as individuals. To have such stern judgments at 12 years old baffles me.
Diversity is something to be appreciated; life would be boring if we were all the same. Remember, someone’s sexual orientation does not define who they are. Their integrity, morality, character and personality do. Perhaps when she is older she will understand this.
