SUMNER – The Comprehensive Plan Committee elected officers Wednesday. They are Chairman Rhea Kennelly, Co-Chairman Ed Hinshaw, Treasurer Mary Ann Haxton and Secretary Henri Arsenault.

The group drafted a mission statement to reflect the purpose of the comprehensive plan. It reads as follows: To create an updated Comprehensive Plan for the town of Sumner to utilize in managing the town’s direction over the next 10 years.

The plan has been divided into existing categories and distributed to members. Duke Harrington will update the section on municipal services. Lana Pratt will update the section on land use. Mary Ann Haxton will update the section on natural resources and Rhea Kennelly is updating demographics and economy.

Ed Hinshaw will work with the original questionnaire, which was circulated in 1987, and the Androscoggin Valley Concerning Organization of Governments to formulate questions that will be used in speaking to people about the plan.

The purpose of the group meetings is to raise awareness about what the committee is doing and to get quick feedback about what is on people’s minds as it relates to the town’s future growth.

Kennelly says she wants people to feel involved and to know that a questionnaire will be mailed out in the future. The committee is seeking input on the best way to encourage citizens to fill out the form and return it.

Harrington presented a visual report on his research on recent trends in capital spending for the fire department.

The next meeting will be Jan. 21. There will be no December meeting.
