PORTLAND – The Center for Cultural Exchange is presenting Irish vocalist Susan McKeown with Scottish fiddle great Johnny Cunningham in their Celtic holiday show, “A Winter Talisman.” The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11.

The two entertainers have a unique program for the darkest days of the year, an exploration of the traditions of their native lands through poetry, music and song.

A talisman is an object or charm believed to confer supernatural powers or protection on its bearer. “A Winter Talisman” has been appealing to audiences in the United States since 2000.

Beginning with Samhain, Nov. 1, the ancient Celtic holiday that heralds the beginning of winter, the show reflects the holiday as both a spiritual and a spirited season. Winter in Scotland and Ireland is a time of celebration and merriment.

The performance features stirring tunes, wistful melodies and driving rhythmical songs of curious Scots traditions and ancient Irish customs. It includes rollicking drinking songs, as well as exquisite love songs.

Accompanied by Irish guitarist Aidan Brennan, their performance will feature songs of winter, and the rich lyricism of early Celtic poetry.

Tickets: $20 in advance, $23 at the door. They can be purchased at the exchange’s box office, 761-1545; at www.centerforculturalexchange.org; or at Bull Moose music stores.
