I have no doubt that President Bush’s Thanksgiving trip to Iraq was a political sham and a public relations gimmick. It was comparable to Bush’s opportunistic flight-suit arrival by jet on an aircraft carrier to proclaim that the mission in Iraq had been accomplished.

We think the best support for our troops should involve finding a way to get them home as quickly as possible. A visit from the president of the United States certainly falls short in that category.

The extraordinary secrecy surrounding the president’s trip was not essential. He landed and stayed in a secure area for less than three hours. He did not speak to a single Iraqi commoner, who he claims to have liberated by his invasion.

Now that he has returned safely to this country, he can continue his foreign policy that will likely lead us into another war.

The quicker he goes away is when our troops will have a happier Thanksgiving.
