BRUNSWICK – “What the Tortoise Told the Hare and vice versa…,” a new play written and directed by Al Miller, opens at The Theater Project, 14 School St., at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12. It will run through Sunday, Dec. 21.
The play is a theatrical trip around the world in song and story in which five actors play various parts.
The stories – from Belgium, India, ancient Greece, native America and Russia – reflect a fable, “The Tortoise and the Hare,” which is never actually performed.
Performances are Friday nights, Dec. 12 and 19, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday mornings, Dec. 13 and 20, at 11 a.m.; and Sunday matinees, Dec. 14 and 21, at 2 p.m. All tickets are $10. For reservations, people can call the box office at 729-8584.
Two magical trees, one cherry and the other, wondrous fruit, form the stage set, under which the stories unfold. An underdog saves the day by outwitting the bad guys, an “overdog” is tricked by his own vanity, a bird warns an old man that robbers are coming, two insect tribes are separated by an extraordinary cherry tree and a mischievous character turns everything into gold.
Miller is the Theater Project’s artistic director. The stage set is by Susan Mills, Bowdoinham-based artist and photographer, with lighting by JP Gagnon. Live music is provided by Truex. The play is part of the theater’s Holiday Fun Series and recommended for the entire family.
