PORTLAND – Portland Stage Company is presenting the Charles Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol,” through Wednesday, Dec. 24.
Set in 1840’s London, “A Christmas Carol” tells a story of personal redemption and social responsibility.
From his portrait of grim poverty in the Cratchit family to the wanton greed of the affluent classes in Ebenezer Scrooge, Dickens depicts the “haves” and “have-nots.”
Portland Stage Company’s adaptation remains true to Dickens’ book. The adaption, with its sparse set and lush costumes, keeps the focus on the human element. The inventive use of actors and lighting provide smooth transitions from world to world, while creating startling effects that enrich Dickens’ words.
Regular performances are at 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Shows are at 2 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, and at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24.
Tickets are $35 for adults, $12 for children under 12 accompanied by an adult and $30 for senior citizens. Portland Stage Company is in the Portland Performing Arts Center at 25A Forest Ave.
