CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A report says that Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are experiencing the region’s highest number of snowmobile-related deaths in 12 years.

According to a report published by the Center for Disease Control, Northern New England reported 28 deaths due to snowmobiles last winter.

New Hampshire had eight fatalities last season.

The cause of most of the fatalities is speeding, carelessness and inexperience, the report said.

Riders are encouraged to follow safety measures, such as wearing a helmet, obeying speed limits, taking a snowmobile safety course and driving during the day.

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – A Portsmouth doctor says drinking too much tonight will leave some New Years Eve revelers poisoned tomorrow morning.

Those morning New Year’s Day headaches, otherwise known as hangovers, are actually poison reactions in the body, said Dr. Donavan Albertson. He says drinking too much alcohol releases too much ethanol into the body, causing the swelling of blood vessels, which leads to pounding headaches.

Albertson says taking over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen might relieve headache symptoms, but they can also irritate the stomach and cause vomiting of blood.

Instead, Albertson suggests tonight’s partygoers drink in moderation.
