CROYDEN, N.H. (AP) – A Manchester taxidermist has been killed in a hunting accident in a private shooting preserve.
Robert Proulx, 58, was hunting with five friends in the 24,000-acre Corbin Park in the Blue Mountain forest Saturday.
Col. Jeff Gray of the Fish and Game Department said it appears one of the hunters, who was not identified, mistook Proulx for game and shot him. Gray said Proulx was wearing jeans and a camouflage jacket, no hunter orange.
The group, which was pursuing elk, boar and deer, had divided up for the hunt. Two of the men took stands in the woods and four others, including Proulx, were hunting on foot.
Gray said Proulx was moving toward the stands when the shot was fired. Gray said Proulx was dead by the time authorities arrived.
The other hunters were Roger Williams of Barrington, John Twitchell of Hampton, Robert Barr of Strafford and Angelo Cacciatore, a visitor from Italy.
He said the incident remains under investigation.
Corbin Park is one of two private shooting preserves in the state, which is not bound by regular state hunting seasons. Fish and Game said the death is the only known fatality in the park’s history dating to 1890. The death also is only the second hunting-related fatality in the state in the last 10 years.
