NORWAY – A Hebron woman was hospitalized in stable condition Monday evening after a noontime crash sent her vehicle careening into a stone wall.
Officer Scott Laliberte said Sylvia Heikkinen, 77, of Hebron, stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake and sped over a median, knocked down two traffic control signs, hit another vehicle broadside and then careened into a stone wall marking the Norway-Paris town line at the four-way intersection on Route 26.
Heikkinen was driving behind 31-year-old Carol West of Paris, who was on Alpine Street, about to turn north onto Route 26.
He said West turned into the intersection when Heikkinen’s vehicle suddenly sped over the median, took out two traffic control signs and struck West’s vehicle at the driver’s door.
After striking West, Heikkinen continued over the sidewalk and into the stone wall.
Heikkinen was taken by ambulance to Stephens Memorial Hospital. West was taken by a friend to SMH where she was treated and released.
Heikkinen’s 2000 Ford Focus was totaled.
West’s 1977 Dodge minivan was driven away, according to Laliberte.
There was no estimate on the damage.
