BETHEL – A man and his wife safely escaped the trailer they were living in on Paris Road late Wednesday night when it caught fire.
Assistant Fire Chief Mike Jodrey said the fire at 60 Paris Road erupted about 11:30 p.m. when tenant Jeff Tyler heard a loud pop in the kitchen area near the hot water heater.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
Jodrey, who was first to arrive at about 11:45 p.m., said flames were coming out of the trailer’s skirt.
“It was burning under the floor, between the frame rails, so we had to attack it from inside the trailer,” Jodrey said.
The fire burned up through the floor, gutting the kitchen and living room. Two bedrooms at either end of the trailer sustained heavy smoke damage.
“Structurally, from the outside, the trailer is still intact. You wouldn’t even know it burned except for a couple of smoke stains on the side of it,” he said.
The trailer, which was totaled, was owned by Tyler’s mother, with whom Jodrey thought the couple were staying. Firefighters from Newry and Greenwood responded to assist.
The Paris Road residence is located about six miles southeast of Bethel’s fire station, near the Locke Mills-Bethel town line. Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly three hours.
