PORTLAND – The Children’s Theatre of Maine will present “A Thousand Cranes” April 2 to 18.
Shows will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at 317 Marginal Way.
“A Thousand Cranes” is the story of Sadako Sasaki, who was only 2 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on her home, Hiroshima, Japan. At 12, she was diagnosed with radiation sickness, but she had a secret hope: according to Japanese legend, if a sick person folds 1,000 origami cranes, the gods will grant her wish to be well again.
So begins Sadako’s quest to fold 1,000 cranes. Based on a true story and written by Kathryn Shultz Miller, “A Thousand Cranes” is a touching story of hope and innocence.
Spiral Arts personnel will teach children how to create origami cranes, which will be assembled into a mobile that will be incorporated into the set. The Center for Cultural Exchange will host sessions in which families can learn about Japanese culture and then attend a performance of “A Thousand Cranes.”
