PERU – Selectmen discussed a possible junkyard ordinance Monday to determine procedures for enforcing laws governing junkyards.
Board members said they could bring a version of an ordinance to town meeting next year.
Discussion about selectmen’s pay and the frequency of meetings was also brought up.
Some board members, including Chairman Andre St. Pierre and Vice Chairman Norman DeRoche, have been looking at different ways to increase citizen participation in town government. They suggested that some people who may want to run for public office could find it easier to attend meetings twice a month rather than every week, even if the number of overall hours remains unchanged.
Any change in pay for selectmen – $25 per meeting or $10 per hour for outside work – would need to be approved by town meeting voters.
