The editorial April 2 criticizing the Maine Citizens for Fair Bear Hunting for boycotting the recent legislative hearing was way off the mark. The hearing was not an opportunity to educate the people of Maine about bear issues, and it certainly was not an opportunity to educate the legislative committee or those in attendance.
The hearing was carefully orchestrated by the small minority of extremist sportsmen to put on a show for the press and the public. Robert Fisk and supporters were right not to legitimize what was guaranteed to be a sham hearing.
Those who lead the opposition to the bear referendum do so not because of anything to do with bears, but because of the potential loss of their control over fish and wildlife management in this state. Their primary issue isn’t loss of bear hunting opportunities. Their primary issue is loss of power.
The fish and wildlife resources of Maine belong to all of the people of Maine. It’s time to take them back.
