CHICHESTER,N.H. (AP) – An internship program at the New Hampshire Community Technical College is letting fire science students immerse themselves in their studies 24 hours a day.
The firefighters-in-training stay rent-free at area fire stations in exchange for being available to respond to calls and perform various maintenance jobs. The students get valuable fire and rescue experience while the towns get live-in firefighters read to go at moment’s notice.
The fire science program has 175 students, about 20 of whom participate in the residential internships. They are helping fill in the ranks in Chichester, Alton, Gilmanton and Laconia.

PLYMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – Plymouth State University’s agreement with the town over who pays for safety services is about to be put to the test.
The agreement signed in February allows the town to bill the university for extra police and fire department costs resulting from extraordinary events, such as riots celebrating the Boston Red Sox making it to the playoffs.
But town officials said the university doesn’t consider its annual Spring Fling weekend an extraordinary event because it happens every year.
Some Selectmen said they plan to send the school a bill anyway, arguing that the town greatly increases its police coverage during the event.
