• May 24 – Mary Beggs of Dixfield reported that sometime after 3 a.m., someone stole her 1997 Dodge Intrepid, which was parked on Roxbury Road (Route 17) by Tommy Guns Pitstop. Chief James Theriault said Beggs’ sister parked the car at the Mexico bar during the night, then reported that someone had stolen the car keys.
“When they went to get the car, it was gone,” Theriault added.
• May 24, 4:55 a.m. – A 2001 Jeep driven by Steven Marcotte, 41, of Jay collided with a young moose on Route 2 by the Naples Packing Co. business. Marcotte was not injured but his Jeep sustained an estimated $6,000 in damage to its right front, side and top; the moose died in the collision.
• May 23 – Terry Provencher of 12 Dix Ave., reported that someone had entered his unlocked, parked 1990 Ford pickup truck sometime between the night of May 22 and morning of May 23. Stolen in the burglary were two knives, a MagLite flashlight and $15 in change.
• May 1 – At or about 10:50 p.m., officer Mike Richard received an Oxford County dispatch call alerting him to a robbery at the Big Apple station and convenience store on Route 2, Theriault said.
Richard, who was given a description of the suspect, saw a man running in the vicinity of the Ripley and Fletcher Co. Mobil fuel station nearer the police station, but headed to the other end of town to the Big Apple as directed.
Once the confusion was sorted out, Richard returned to the downtown area and the Mobil station.
“The guy had bought something and when the store clerk opened the cash drawer, the suspect reached across the counter and stole a bunch of $20s,” Theriault said.
An estimated $100 was taken in the robbery.
The man ran out of the store, but he was reportedly recognized by a Ripley and Fletcher Co. employee driving in to work.
After the man was identified in a police photo lineup as Ralph Buck, 26, of Dix Avenue, an Oxford County arrest warrant was issued, Theriault said.
But the county will have to get in line to prosecute Buck.
On May 10, Buck was arrested by Waterville police and charged with strong-arm robbery, said Kennebec County jail administrative assistant Cathy Heil.
Buck has been incarcerated in Kennebec County jail since that arrest, because he could not post bail of either $1,540 cash or $15,000 surety.
In addition to the Oxford County warrant, there was also a Skowhegan District Court warrant out on Buck for theft by unauthorized taking, and theft by unauthorized taking by forgery.
Heil said Buck, who is to be arraigned later this summer, had also violated probation.
