PORTLAND – The Children’s Theatre of Maine will present the première of “Fairy Houses” based on a book by Tracy Kane on July 7 to Aug. 7. She will attend the opening night.

“Fairy Houses” was adapted from Kane’s popular children’s book by the theater’s artistic director, Pamela DiPasquale, with music by James Alberty. This is the same team who collaborated on 2002’s production of “Stellaluna.”

“Fairy Houses” tells the story of Kristen, a young girl whose parents are divorced. In order to make a fresh start, Kristen’s mother relocates them to a small island off the coast of Maine, where Kristen’s mother grew up and which she remembers fondly. Angry with her mother, Kristen struggles against calling their new place a home. However, with help from a mysterious young girl and the magical fairies that inhabit the island, Kristen begins to learn that a home is more than a structure someone lives in; it’s a place where one is loved.

Fairy Houses will be performed Wednesdays and Thursdays at 2 p.m., and Fridays & Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at 317 Marginal Way. The shows from Wednesday, July 7, to Friday, July 9, at 2 p.m. are preview performances, with ticket prices of $6 for children and $8 for adults.

Opening night is Friday, July 9, at 7 p.m., with a special appearance by the author and a keepsake program.

Tickets for opening night are $15 for children and $25 for adults. Regular ticket prices for the remaining performances are $7 for children and $9 for adults. People can call (207) 828-0617 for reservations. This production is recommended for all ages.
