FARMINGTON – Three planters with lilac trees will be moved from Broadway to Main Street to improve traffic safety.
Two trees will be moved to the intersections of Exchange and Church streets near the courthouse. The third will be moved to the striped no-parking zone next to Bangor Savings Bank.
Town Manager Richard Davis said affected businesses have agreed to the new positioning.
The planters were installed on Broadway in May, but since then residents have been concerned that they interfere with traffic safety. Of most concern is one in front of Peoples Bank, which has blocked armored truck access.
Farmington Public Works Director Mitch Boulette said the planters weighed 1 tons before earth and plants were placed in them. With the planted trees, he estimates they weigh 3 tons. He is currently seeking a forklift with a 4-ton capacity and blades at least 5 feet long to move the trees. He hopes to have the project completed within two weeks.
The three planters already on Main Street will remain.
