CHAIN OF PONDS – A logging truck owned by a Canadian company traveling on Route 27 near the border rolled over and dumped its contents about 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Two Franklin County deputies, Eustis firefighters and state police responded to the scene on Ledge Hill in Chain of Ponds Township. The Carrabassett Fire Department was also called to respond, but that request was canceled while personnel were en route.
Deputy Michelle St. Clair believed the accident was due to excessive speed, saying it is not uncommon on the winding stretch of road.
Currently undergoing major reconstruction, the section where the accident occurred is paved. There were no workers in the area at the time, she said.
The truck lost its entire load, spilling much of it over an embankment. Eustis firefighters assisted law enforcement officers in removing logs from the road.
When St. Clair left the scene to respond to an ATV accident at 2:30 p.m., the damaged truck had been righted and a second truck was being loaded with its cargo.
The driver, Patrick Labrecque, 24, of Quebec, refused medical treatment. He was issued a summons for failure to wear a seat belt.
