BETHEL – The Mahoosuc Arts Council will sponsor Mollyockett Day on Saturday, July 17. It’s an annual community event honoring Mollyockett, a Pequawket Indian who lived among the early settlers of Western Maine.
Mollyockett Day has been an annual attraction for thousands of Maine residents and vacationers since 1960. It features a parade, races of all kinds – a road race, a bed race and a duck race, arts and crafts, great entertainment, plenty of food, a frog jumping contest, and fireworks at dusk, organizers say.
The day kicks off with the Key Bank Mollyocket Day Classic Road Race at 8:30 a.m. with 1 km, 3 km and 5 km run and walk categories for all ages.
The parade begins at 11 a.m. Its theme this year, “Folk and Fairy Tales,” promises fanciful floats.
The bandstand on the Bethel Common will be the site of the crowning of this year’s “Princess Mollyocket” as well as an array of entertainment featuring Roger Tincknell, Songs for Kids, the Mahoosuc Community Band, The Muddy Marsh Ramblers, the eighth annual Old Time Fiddlers Contest at 5:30 p.m. and Malinda Liberty and The Silver and Lace Band at 7:30 p.m.
There’s also the 22nd annual Western Maine Frog Jumping Contest, an “Art irondack” chair auction and the duck race at the Artist’s Covered Bridge on Sunday River.
Fireworks at dusk will conclude the event.
