The big wild Western steer which escaped last Friday when being unloaded with a lot for E. W. Penley’s slaughter house in Auburn is now safe. All cut up in enormous sides of beef, the animal is now in the cold storage room at the packing house. The animal was located on the side of “Free Soil Hill” made famous by the many political speeches which have been made there during the days when the party of the name it bears was before the public.

50 Years Ago, 1954

Buckfield Village Baptist Church celebrated the 100th anniversary of its reorganization. Anniversary plans were prepared by Rev. Erold R. Farrar, pastor of the Church. The first Baptist Church in Buckfield, or Bucktown as it was first known, was organized in 1791 after several visits by Elder James Potter, a pioneer missionary and Elder Snow, Thomaston, with a membership of 17.

Good crowds but still plenty of room for more. That’s the story this summer at Range Pond’s State Park in the facility’s third season and park manager Leland Bisbee sees it as the best since the park opened. For several Sundays there have been close to 300 cars in the area’s spacious parking lot.
