FARMINGTON – Village Harmony will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Village Harmony is an ensemble of mostly high school age young people who are dedicated singers and instrumentalists from across the country. They perform harmony singing from community traditions around the world. They will perform African music, gospel, jazz, and traditional American shape-note songs, plus Spanish renaissance works this year.

The group is led by Fred Onovwerosuoke, a Ghana-born choir director/musician currently living in New Orleans. John Harrison, leader of the Montpelier Gospel Choir, and Amity Baker, director of Burlington, Vt.’s Social Band, a singing group that specializes in traditional and original music.

The members of Village Harmony are youths who attend a summer camp in rural Vermont where they learn music in various styles and languages. Then they go on tour and perform from town to town, mostly in New England. They have entertained Farmington audiences every summer for five years.

Admission for the concert is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, children under 16, free. The concert is sponsored by the Arts Institute of Western Maine, an affiliate of the University of Maine at Farmington.
