LIVERMORE FALLS – The second of the suggestions made by the consultants to improve the appearance of downtown is now being implemented, Town Manager Alan Gove told members of the Downtown Betterment Group on Monday.

That suggestion was to remove a major portion of the wall near the upper entrance to the municipal building. Much of the wall is now gone, and the remainder is waiting for the cap to be replaced.

The wall created a visual barrier from the street onto the gazebo, one of the town’s main attractions and activity points, and it hid the off-street parking behind it.

The group discussed selecting a logo for itself, and a river scene was chosen. It was agreed to paint the downtown light poles in a black matte finish, and Gove will get more information on the most energy-efficient type of lighting.

The group is working to incorporate as a non-profit organization, and will be filing the necessary paperwork.

Officers and board members will be chosen at the Sept. 13 meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the former court.

Also at the meeting, Gove displayed a miniature ferry, a model of the one that once connected the west and east sides of the Androscoggin River. A flat barge with railings, the ferry was attached to both sides of the river by large cables.

He said he would like to talk with area residents who know about those old-time conveyances. He said it is his dream to build a working ferry as a tribute to early times and as a tourist attraction.
