FARMINGTON – A mountain bike, kayak and other prizes will be offered for the Healthy Community Coalition’s first Walk Around the World contest during September.

Residents of Franklin County, Livermore and Livermore Falls are invited to participate by recording miles walked over the month. The goal is a communitywide tally of 24,000 miles – the distance around the world.

All participants will be eligible for the prize drawing at the end of the challenge. Prizes include: a mountain bike and helmet from Northern Lights Hearth and Sports; a $50 gift certificate to K&J Apparel and Footwear; two day passes to Titcomb Mountain Ski Area; three all-day passes to Carrabassett Valley Anti-Gravity Complex; three personal yoga classes for one person with Megan Roberts; and three high-end/multi-function pedometers from the Healthy Community Coalition.

“Last September, Franklin Community Health Network employees walked 6,000 miles, to Farmington, Calif.” and back, said Health Community Coalition’s Nate Morse. “If one work site can do this, then greater Franklin County can walk around the world.'”

The monthlong program allows any individual, school or classroom, work site or group to participate. Registration for the program will take place throughout September. At the end of each week of the program, participants are asked to report the number of miles walked for that week by phone or e-mail.

At the completion of the program, participants should send in their activity calendars by Oct. 10 by mail, e-mail or telephone. Participants may use any method to measure miles walked, including a pedometer, car odometer or bicycle odometer.

Individuals may register for Walk Around the World at one of several places: the town offices, UMF Health and Fitness Center, K&J Apparel & Footwear, Northern Lights Hearth and Sports, Franklin Memorial Hospital and Ski Depot.
