FARMINGTON – Jordan Miller sat on the floor outside the school office Thursday as he looked over his cross country workout schedule.
Miller, a sophomore at Mt. Blue High School, said he is looking forward to starting school next week.
“I have a lot of challenging classes,” he said. “I want to see how I do in that. Some of them are challenging and a lot of them are fun.”
The 15-year-old counts college preparation English and Algebra II as challenging classes.
Miller transferred from an Illinois school to the Farmington school his freshman year.
He likes it here.
“All the teachers are really nice, and all the kids were pretty inviting too,” Miller said.
He already has an idea of what he’s going to do after he graduates.
“I plan on going into the Air Force and being a pilot,” he said. “I’ve always liked planes. I’m fascinated with the airplanes and how they work. I guess you’d call me patriotic. And there’s a guy I know, Dustin Ireland, who is a pilot. He’s obviously a hometown hero.”
Ireland is a Mount Blue High School alumnus and former star quarterback from Industry now serving in the Air Force as a fighter pilot stationed in Alaska.
This year Miller doesn’t have any courses that would satisfy his interest in planes, he said, but next year he is hoping to take mechanical classes.
He likes to challenge himself, Miller said.
“I just like the thrill of a challenge, whether it is in the classroom, in the air or sports, wherever,” he said.
The teen participates in cross country, track and basketball. He started preseason cross country training last week.
He’s looking forward to a good year, he said, both in academics and athletics.
