PORTLAND – The Mad Horse Theatre Company will produce three plays at the Portland Performing Arts’ Studio Theatre this season.

“I believe there is great confusion and uncertainty in our country,” said Artistic Director Andrew Sokoloff.

“We are living in ‘interesting times’ (to paraphrase the ancient Chinese curse) and our job as artists is to share what we think, what we believe and how we feel. This season we’re asking the question: ‘How do I live in this world?’ And we’re asking in three very different ways.”

“In the hysterically funny and touching ‘Cloud Nine’ we’re looking at family in some very unusual ways,” Sokoloff said. ” ‘What Happened Was…’ is a beautiful and painful search for romantic love. In ‘Blackout,’ strangers come together to share their stories and struggle with addiction.”

According to Sokoloff, each play is completely different in tone and style, yet incredibly imaginative and theatrical.

He noted that Portland Stage Company is continuing to invest in The Studio Theatre so that it’s an “even better place to see a play: comfortable seats, a new stage floor, soundproofing, masking, etc. .”

The Mad Horse 18th season’s plays will be:

• Cloud 9 by Caryl Churchill, Oct. 7 to Oct. 31

This is a comedy that includes sexual politics, gender confusion, imperialism, self-discovery and infidelity, as well as a man dressed up as a 5-year-old child with a naughty vocabulary.

• “What Happened Was…” by Tom Noonan, Feb. 10 to Feb. 27

A simple dinner shared by two shy New Yorkers turns into a dark night of painful revelation and longing.

• “Drunks” by Gary Lennon, April 14 to May 1

Lennon’s unflinching look at an AA meeting is real, raw and totally mesmerizing, according to Sokoloff.
