Too many people in the state of Maine do not have health care. Those that do are often paying ridiculously high premiums and prescription costs.

About a year ago, my husband and I were forced to make a decision between maintaining my health care coverage and being able to pay our monthly bills. Since that time, I have been living without health care and, when faced with ever-increasing insurance premiums, wondering if I would ever get it back.

Recently, I have seen the commercials on TV for the Dirigo health care plan, and I feel like this is the answer I have been waiting for. There are so many people like me who don’t qualify for MaineCare and are going without the basic checkups and quality care that every person needs.

Dirigo is a giant leap toward making health care in the state affordable for all Mainers, as well as relieving some of the burden on the state caused by uninsured claims. I want to express my sincere thanks to all the people who worked hard to make this program a reality.

Living in a time when health care is a problem across the country, I am proud to live in a state that shows its values with such progressive legislation.
