As the father of a newly minted, licensed teen, I read with no small sense of confusion and disbelief the Sun Journal’s series of stories on speed (Aug. 29 and Sept. 5).

Perhaps I missed the irony in the piece that showcased Mr. Andy Shevenell, the unrepentant “speed demon,” but what I got from it was little more than a glorification of a boys-will-be-boys, modern-day “Dukes of Hazard,” whose lust for speed is wild and thrilling.

The article ends with the ominous warning that the helmetless Mr. Shevenell may pay with his life for his behavior. Were he to run into someone at 111 miles an hour, he would most probably kill them and, if not, leave them with the spectacle of his certain death. Isn’t that the responsible story to tell?

It appears the Sun Journal does not agree: In order find out how I too can become a successful speeder, I followed the boxed title “More Speed Inside” to “Helpful Hints” and learned how my daughter and I can avoid nasty fines and prosecution and get our lead feet back on the road. More speed indeed.
