FARMINGTON – Wildlife biologist Chuck Hulsey of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will present a program on the bear referendum at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, in Conference Room 123 of Olsen Student Center at the University of Maine at Farmington. The program, offered by the Audubon Society, is free and open to the public.
Maine voters in November will decide the referendum question, which reads: “Do you want to make it a crime to hunt bears with bait, traps or dogs, except to protect property, public safety or for research?”
The program will provide background information on this issue for voters, such as where and how black bears in Maine live, how the state manages the bear population, and what effect passage of the referendum would have on the present management regimen for this species. The public is welcome to attend the session.
