FARMINGTON – Sexual Assault Victims Emergency Services Inc., a 24-hour rape crisis and information hot line is offering training sessions Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m., from Sept. 15 to Dec. 8, except holidays.

Two Saturday classes will be held Oct. 23 and Nov. 13, for counseling skills lab and to practice role play. All sessions are held at the SAVES office.

SAVES provides all the training necessary for someone to become a helpful support person to those who have been affected by sexual violence. No previous experience is required to attend this training; just an honest, caring spirit and a willingness to learn.

Participants will receive specialized training in crisis intervention skills as well as information about the legal and medical systems response to sexual violence. Advocates will have the use of a pager while they are on call and would be reimbursed for any expenses. Supportive ongoing supervision will be provided.

SAVES advocates come from all walks of life and have various educational backgrounds. Some have been personally affected by sexual violence, some are students, some are women and some are men.

Participants must be 18 years or older to apply. The free course is available to those who will volunteer with SAVES. University of Maine at Farmington credit may be available.
