FARMINGTON – A Solon man accused of hitting SAD 9’s special education director with a car in June and leaving the scene was indicted by a grand jury.

Paul Hemond, 25, who was initially said to live in North Anson but has a Solon post office box, was indicted Monday on a charge of failure to stop after an accident. Hemond allegedly struck Edward Ferreira of New Sharon as he was jogging June 20 along Industry Road in New Sharon. Hemond didn’t stop at the accident scene but turned himself in to police the next day.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Stephen Charles said at the time that Hemond basically told police he didn’t know what to do and he was scared, which is why he left the scene.

Ferreira, who was training for a marathon at the time, was seriously injured in the accident. His pelvis was separated and fractured, and a knee was dislocated and had all four ligaments torn.

Ferreira had two surgeries as of late July related to the injuries. His pelvis was reconstructed with pins and screws, and he underwent a 13-hour surgery on his knee.

Ferreira spent time in a soft cast from his hip to his ankle, and was in a wheelchair this summer while recuperating.
