FARMINGTON – Members of the Farmington Rotary Club plan to be out the next two Saturdays doing some work to beautify an area along Prescott Field.

The 60-plus-member club plans to clear brush, build benches and create an attractive walking trail on the old rail bed on the field off Front Street to commemorate Rotary International’s 100th anniversary.

On Saturday, Sept. 18, members will be clearing brush along the edges of the trail and the parking lot area, said club President Buzz Davis.

Next Saturday, Sept. 25, members will be building benches that have a concrete base.

Both work days are scheduled to run from 8 to 11 a.m., Davis said. The public is invited to help.

The University of Maine at Farmington has approved the project on its land, he said. He said the club wanted to do the project to make the park nicer.

Davis, noting he wasn’t speaking for other club members, said he hopes the bridge over the Sandy River that connects downtown Farmington to West Farmington is replaced so that people could walk from one side to the other.

Club members are also taking on special monthly projects.

Last month, individual members donated money to buy three cows to help the Patan West Rotary Club to supply native cows to poor villagers in Panchamul, Nepal. That project was to address malnutrition, particularly among children and seniors citizens. The cows cost $130 each.

This month, club members are donating money to help fund a medical boat in Bangladesh, Davis said.

Next month, club members plan to do a project for Iraq, Davis said.

The club meets at 7 a.m. Thursdays at the Homestead Bakery on Broadway in Farmington.
