JAY – About $15,000 is still needed to complete enhancements at the World War II monument on Main Street in Chisholm. Those working to put in two more monuments and four benches, among other improvements, have already raised about $15,000.

“We raised half of what we need,” said Hyla Friedman, who is spearheading the effort.

She estimates the project is going to cost $30,000.

Jay voters raised $10,000 at the annual town meeting, and a variety of fund-raisers and donations have added up to about $5,000, Friedman said.

The group is now hoping people will buy 10-foot sections of steel ornamental fence for $500, Friedman said.

There are 27 sections of fence needed for the project, she said.

Donations would allow donors to place a plaque in memory of whomever they want, and the name of the donor, Friedman said.

The Jay woman asks that community members respect the monument because it’s a memorial to those who fought and died in the military from this area in World War II, she said.

“World War II veterans are very proud of that,” she said.

The two new monuments would recognize veterans from other wars from the Revolutionary War up to the Persian Gulf War, she said.

“That’s all that is permitted by Congress,” Friedman said.
