Incoming freshman students of Bates College, their parents and relatives got a taste of Lewiston-Auburn hospitality – and Maine chickens, too – yesterday when the first annual Twin City barbecue for the students was held at Lewiston Memorial Armory. More than 700 partook of the feast, listened to two brief speeches and spent a great deal of time commenting about the goodwill gesture and getting acquainted with each other. The barbecue, sponsored by Twin City service and civic clubs, was hailed by Bates College President Charles F. Phillips as a “splendid demonstration of the hospitality that prevails in the Twin Cities for Bates students.”

The selfless heroics of a 22-year-old Turner man are being credited with saving the life of a fellow worker Wednesday afternoon at DeCoster Egg Farms at North Turner. A company official, Duke Goranites, identified the victim as David LaChapelle, 28, of Livermore. According to reports, LaChappelle was operating a bulk loader when the boom struck high-power lines sending a massive electrical charge through his body and freezing him to the controls at the rear of the vehicle. Another company spokesman, Dennis Damon, said Norman Maddocks, a laborer at the brooder houses where the accident occurred, pulled LaChappelle away from the burning vehicle. The injured man was transported by Turner Rescue to Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, where he was admitted for treatment of burns and shock.
