WILTON – Selectmen will meet with Maine Chiefs of Police Association President Robert Schwartz to discuss consultation in hiring a new police chief Tuesday. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the town office.
Officials appointed Wilton Police Officer Ed Leahy as the town’s interim Police Chief earlier this month after longtime Chief James Parker retired. Parker held the position for 23 years.
Town Manager Peter Nielsen said the Chiefs of Police Association could help with laying out the minimum qualifications for a permanent police chief, screening resumes, putting together an ad for the position, and giving ideas about the size and make-up of a review board that would make recommendations to officials.
If the town decides to hire the association for consulting, it is expected to cost more than $1,000. The process would take two to three months, Nielsen said.
Officials will act on a recommendation from Nielsen and Leahy for the replacement of a damaged police cruiser and appoint Stephen Smith as a part-time officer.
Selectmen plan to award a bid to cut brush on the main water transmission line. Selectmen will also meet with a resident to discuss concerns at the Pond Road boat launch. They will also hear a quarterly report from Fire Chief Sonny Dunham.
Officials will discuss a resolution by the board on the Palesky tax cap proposal. They also plan to sign a pole permit application for Verizon for a new residential service on Prospect Street. Nielsen will report to officials about a Maine Department of Environmental Protection inspection of the town’s closed landfill.
