Participants may pre-register by calling Literacy Volunteers at 778-3460 or mailing registrations to Literacy Volunteers, 108 Fairbanks Road, Farmington, ME 04938. According to Proliteracy Worldwide, 21 percent to 23 percent of the population of the United States functions at the lowest literacy level. Literacy Volunteers serving Franklin and Somerset counties work on the local level to fight a national problem by providing adults with professionally trained volunteer tutors. Last year, Literacy Volunteers worked with more than 100 students in Franklin County alone. All tutors are volunteers, but Literacy Volunteers needs help to sustain its efforts.
