RANGELEY – Maine Department of Transportation has awarded a bid to M & H Logging and Construction for enhancement of the existing scenic overlook on Route 4. The project amount is $236,487.18. The work will consist of asphalt, an aggregate sub-base, a retaining wall, curbing, and incidental work. The project should be completed by Nov. 19.

Career workshops

WILTON – Free workshops will be held at the Wilton CareerCenter at 865 Route 2 in October. Career class

FARMINGTON – Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community will offer a 10-week Career Life Planning class to be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays starting Sept. 28 and ending Nov. 30. In this training, participants will identify their personal values and learn how they can express them in their career, review their skills, interests and experiences and match them to career and job options. In part two, they will learn how to write a resume, interview with confidence, and conduct a winning job search. The first part, on career exploration, will be held from Sept. 28 to Nov. 2. The second part, on job search skills, will be held from Nov. 9 to 30. Participants may take either part, or both. There is no fee to participate. FARMINGTON – The Franklin County Children’s Task Force will hold its annual walk-a-thon, Make Tracks for Kids, on Saturday, Oct. 16, starting at Kineowatha Park in Wilton. Teams are being formed to participate in it. The money raised helps local children through programs offered by the task force. Participants choose to walk 1.5 or 5 miles. Registration begins at 8 a.m.; followed by the walk at 9 a.m. People who raise $25 or more will have their name entered in a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses. DAR lunch

TEMPLE – The Colonial Daughters Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the home of Melanie Farmer. FARMINGTON – Life Enrichment Advancing People Inc. will hold its annual meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in the Bass Room at Franklin Memorial Hospital. This will be an opportunity for area community members, consumers, people with developmental disabilities or their families to learn more about LEAP’s services and activities and to meet LEAP’s Board of Directors and staff. Clinic services

FARMINGTON – Franklin Memorial Hospital has expanded its cardiology clinic services. According to Taffy Davis, FMH outpatient and oncology manager, Dr. Francis DeRook will provide cardiology consulting services at the hospital on the first and third Mondays of each month starting Oct. 4. DeRook practices diagnostic cardiology with a special emphasis on congestive heart failure and the subspecialty of cardiac imaging, including ultrasound or echocardiology and nuclear cardiology at the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute, a division of Central Maine Medical Center. Ghost Train rides

STRONG – The Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Rail Road, along with the Strong Parks Committee, has revived the Ghost Train. The Ghost Train will ride the rails on Saturday, Oct. 9, at Dill Woods in Phillips. The first train will pull out of the station at 6:45 p.m., and tickets will be sold until 9 p.m. Organizers are seeking volunteers to help out with scenes or with general operations. People interested in volunteering are asked to call Sue Ellsworth at 684-4520 or 639-3264. Mt. Abram High School students are welcome to help as part of their community service requirement for graduation. On the Ghost Train, passengers experience a ride down the narrow-gauge railroad while viewing some hauntingly good scenes along the way. Refreshments will be on sale at the station. The fund-raiser will benefit the Lance Cpl. Scott Paul Park and the R.L. & R.S. Railroad.

Apple festival

FARMINGTON – The Fairbanks School Neighborhood Association will hold an apple festival on Oct. 16 at the school site on Route 4. Donations are needed and apple-related items for a white elephant table. Items such as apple trinkets, peelers, books or tablecloths are being sought. The festival will have a cider making demonstration and cider for all, plus other demonstrations and pie contest. All proceeds will be used for rebuilding the Fairbanks School, which burned in 1998.
