FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington Community Chorus is looking for singers for its Dec. 4 and 5 concerts on “Variety is the Spice of Life.” The program will feature classical, folk and holiday music. Rehearsals are held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays starting Oct. 4 in Nordica Auditorium of Merrill Hall at UMF.
There will be a rehearsal on Tuesday, Oct. 12, to make up for the loss of rehearsal on Oct. 11 due to Columbus Day.
The 100-member choir will be conducted by Dennis Hayes and will collaborate with guest artists Andy Buckland on banjo and an a cappella group called Northfield.
There is a $25 fee to participate. The choir is open to community members, faculty and students. No audition is required, people can simply attend the first rehearsal on Oct. 4. For more information, people can check out the Western Maine Choral Society’s Web page at FranklinCountyArts.org.
For beginning choral singers, a new workshop, “A Choral Primer: An Introduction to Choral Singing,” will be offered to cover the basics of choral singing and participation. Steven Pane and Dan Woodward will teach the workshop and cover topics such as vocal technique, following a choral score and how to practice at home, even without a piano.
The workshops will be 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Sunday evenings, Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, in Nordica Auditorium. Although participation in Community Chorus is not required, it is suggested as a way for workshop participants to put their new skills into practice.
