JAY – The annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2. Jay residents may bring hazardous waste items to the collection at no charge. The collection will be held at the Farmington Public Works garage this year, there will be no collection at the Jay Transfer Station. Products that may be brought to the collection include: pesticides, herbicides, old an tifreeze and gasoline, household cleaning supplies, pool chemicals, roofing tar and oil-based paint. Any additional items that are marked poison, corrosive, toxic, flammable and volatile may also be brought. People are asked not to bring latex paint and alkaline batteries, as they are not hazardous. Farmington waste

FARMINGTON – The annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be Saturday, Oct. 2. at the town recycling center off Route 2. Products that will be accepted this year include: oil-based paint and painting supplies, pesticides, pool chemicals, cleaning supplies, old gasoline and other products containing solvents. Residents may look for the words poison, danger, corrosive, toxic, volatile, flammable, caution or warning on the label, organizers said. There is no preregistration, but residents are being advised to go between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., because arriving early may result in a longer wait than coming in toward the end of the collection. Gospel concert

LIVERMORE – The LaClaires will present a bluegrass and country gospel concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in the North Livermore Baptist Church, at Route 4 and Crash Road. A free will offering will be taken. All are welcome.

Emergency drill

JAY – The annual drill of the Emergency Preparedness Plan conducted by the Disaster Planning Committee will be 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 2, on Route 17 in North Jay, near the old Bass factory. This year’s drill will feature a school bus accident carrying about 20 students. It will test the emergency response system and educate emergency responders on school bus construction and extrication. Organizations involved include area schools, ambulance services, fire departments and law enforcement; the Franklin Emergency Management Agency; Franklin Memorial Hospital; LifeFlight of Maine; and the Maine Emergency Management Agency.

Square dance

WILTON – The Friendship Squares Square Dance Club will host a square dance from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at Cushing School. The dress will be casual; the caller will be Marty Van Wart, with Carol Stewart as round dance cuer.

FARMINGTON – Franklin Memorial Hospital has expanded its cardiology clinic services. According to Taffy Davis, FMH outpatient and oncology manager, Dr. Francis DeRook will provide cardiology consulting services at the hospital on the first and third Mondays of each month starting Oct. 4. DeRook practices diagnostic cardiology with a special emphasis on congestive heart failure and the subspecialty of cardiac imaging, including ultrasound or echocardiology and nuclear cardiology at the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute, a division of Central Maine Medical Center. JAY – Parents of Jay High School seniors can attend an information session about the college search and application process. It will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, in the high school library. Focus on candidates’ answers

FARMINGTON – The Western Maine Legislative Caucus will sponsor a candidates’ breakfast at 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at the University of Maine at Farmington in the Olsen Student Center. The caucus will distribute its fourth copy of Western Maine candidates’ responses to a questionnaire about regional and state issues. The Western Maine Legislative Caucus is a partnership of UMF, the Mission at the Eastward, SAD 9, the Franklin Community Health Network, Western Maine Community Action and the Alliance. Ghost Train rides

STRONG – The Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Rail Road, along with the Strong Parks Committee, has revived the Ghost Train. The Ghost Train will ride the rails on Saturday, Oct. 9, at Dill Woods in Phillips. The first train will pull out of the station at 6:45 p.m., and tickets will be sold until 9 p.m. Organizers are seeking volunteers to help out with scenes or with general operations. People interested in volunteering are asked to call Sue Ellsworth at 684-4520 or 639-3264. Mt. Abram High School students are welcome to help as part of their community service requirement for graduation. On the Ghost Train, passengers experience a ride down the narrow-gauge railroad while viewing some hauntingly good scenes along the way. Refreshments will be on sale at the station. The fund-raiser will benefit the Lance Cpl. Scott Paul Park and the R.L. & R.S. Railroad.

Apple festival

FARMINGTON – The Fairbanks School Neighborhood Association will hold an apple festival on Oct. 16 at the school site on Route 4. Donations are needed and apple-related items for a white elephant table. Items such as apple trinkets, peelers, books or tablecloths are being sought. The festival will have a cider making demonstration and cider for all, plus other demonstrations and pie contest. All proceeds will be used for rebuilding the Fairbanks School, which burned in 1998.
