STRONG – Chris Hardy wanted to be sure that residents in Strong were not surprised if they smelled chlorine in their tap water, he said.
Hardy, the water district’s superintendent, put public notices in the newspaper to alert his customers of the temporary change. The notice is not legally required, but he said he’d rather they knew upfront.
As of Friday, the Strong Water District began temporary chlorine disinfection of the town’s new ground water source. The disinfection is required by the state’s safe drinking water laws under the Department of Environmental Protection and is a precaution for all new sources of drinking water, he said.
The town’s water system recently experienced a reduction in flow due to rust buildup in a 14-inch production well dug in 1979, said Hardy. A new backup well is due to come online within the next two weeks and will be used intermittently while repairs are made to the old well.
