JAY – A new console and base radio were installed at the Jay Police Department last week at no cost to the department.
The console and radio were purchased with a Homeland Security grant of about $17,800.
A new repeater system and an 80-foot tower was also installed at the town highway garage, a joint effort between the fire and police departments. Some of that project was also paid by a Homeland Security grant of $12,800. Total cost of the tower project with repeaters was about $25,000.
According to a prepared statement, radio communication had been impossible in some parts of Jay; firefighters and police offers often lost contact with the dispatch center. The project has been in the planning stage for about four years.
