FARMINGTON – A therapeutic riding program at Knowlton Corner Farm will benefit from the proceeds of a haunted barn there this weekend.
Arlene Gavoni started the program two years ago “on a very small scale,” she said Tuesday. She now has the assistance of two trainers and five other regular volunteers who offer riding programs to six clients with mental, behavioral and limited physical disabilities.
“We’re still in the growth stage,” said Gavoni, who is hoping the event will draw attention and funding to the program. Last year, the haunted barn brought in about $150, she said. She’s hoping to purchase additional adaptive equipment.
The riding arena will be set up in a maze with more than a dozen scary scenarios around every corner. Lit by black lights and obscured by fog, at least 26 volunteers will perform skits including a “Planet of the Apes” scene and “psycho scarecrows” in a cornfield.
Children can also participate in a pumpkin-carving contest. Submissions should not utilize stencils and need to be at the farm by noon Friday. They will be judged that evening and lit for display during the event. Gift certificates and other prizes will be awarded.
