JAY – Police are investigating the theft of 600 to 700 pounds of metal from Howie’s Welding either Wednesday night or early Thursday. The replacement value is estimated at $1,000 to $1,200.

Various sizes and shapes of metal stock material, in lengths averaging 2 to 3 feet long, had been taken from an outside storage area at the Main Street business, Jay Police Chief Larry White Sr. stated in a news release.

The angles, plate, round bar and flat bar pieces were stainless steel and aluminum, he said.

A piece of aluminum grating for catwalks was also taken, as well as bronze and brass pieces for solid round handrails, he stated.

The material may have been taken for personal use, or may be redeemed for cash at a recycling facility, White said.

If anyone has any information on this case, they should contact officer Troy Young or Detective Russell Adams of the Jay Police Department at 897-6766. All calls will be confidential.
