With the bulk of precincts reporting by Wednesday afternoon, incumbent Sen. Chandler Woodcock, R-Farmington, had won 55 percent of the vote to earn a third term in the Senate.

The district covers numerous towns and unorganized territories in Franklin, Kennebec and Somerset counties.

Woodcock had 11,574 votes. Challengers Richard “Spike” Carey, a former lawmaker and Democrat from Belgrade, had 6,868 votes, and Clyde Dyar of Mount Vernon, an undeclared candidate, received 2,602.

Woodcock, a teacher, won in all Franklin County towns, and in other towns including Mount Vernon and Vienna. Among the towns Carey won were Readfield and Fayette.

“First and foremost, I want to compliment my two opponents for the nature of their campaigns,” Woodcock said. “We all ran a clean race.”

It was a decent campaign, he said.

“It’s a real honor for me to be elected for a third term in the Senate. I’m looking forward to serving the people,” he said.

Taxes top Woodcock’s agenda, along with the state’s general economy.
