RANGELEY – The Rangeley Lakes Regional School was broken into over the weekend, and about $5,000 in computer equipment was stolen.

It wasn’t taken far.

The equipment, including six Palm Pilot hand-held devices, was found outside a side door at the school Monday in three garbage bags, Rangeley police Officer Mary-Ellen Michaud said.

Entry was gained into the Magnolia Road school by a broken window, she said.

A pry bar was used to get at the equipment in one classroom, she said.

“They apparently knew what they were looking for,” Michaud said.

Among the items taken and then left outside were: a set of speakers, a cordless phone with answering machine, the six Palm Pilots, one USB hub, a download port, fire-wire hardware, a 17-inch flat-screen monitor and a digital projector taken off the ceiling worth $2,000, Michaud said.

“It is still under investigation,” she said.
