Construction on the corner of Bates and Birch streets has created a dangerous intersection. Drivers and pedestrians should be wary, and the city of Lewiston should take immediate action to reduce the chances of an accident.
Work is being done on Birch Street, and the sightline for traffic traveling away from downtown is blocked. Traffic at the intersection is controlled by stop signs on Bates Street. Cars must inch forward – into the flow of traffic on Birch – to see around the construction. Cars traveling on Birch, however, don’t have a stop sign and can proceed through the intersection without slowing.
It’s an accident waiting to happen.
By temporarily placing stop signs on Birch Street and turning the intersection into a four-way stop for now, the city might be able to prevent injury and property destruction.
With events scheduled at The Colisee and the Multi-Purpose Center, a little effort to make Birch Street safer could make a big difference.
