LEWISTON – Billy Ball scored the eventual game-winner with 7:25 remaining to lift Bates College to a 6-5 win over Williams College in men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
Despite the absence of midfielder David Pritchard, the Bobcats (7-0) jumped out to a 2-1 lead at the completion of the first quarter. But the Ephs (3-3) bounced back in the second quarter to tie the contest, 3-3, going into halftime.
Williams grabbed the lead, 4-3, early in the third on a goal by Eric Gottenborg, but Bates quickly tied the game on Justin Simon’s tally less than a minute later. Simon led Bates’ offense with two goals, while Ball had a goal and an assist in the win.
Bowdoin 9, Connecticut College 7
BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College rallied from a halftime deficit to slip past Connecticut College 9-7 in men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
The Polar Bears (5-2) jumped out to a quick three-goal lead as Ford Baker, Matt Nedlinger and Any Nelson each tallied a goal, but it was not enough as the Camels (2-5) closed out the half with a 5-4 lead.
Barker tallied a pair of second-half goals to spark a 5-0 run that put the game out of reach.
Charlie Legg made 10 saves in net to record the win.
Amherst 11, Colby 4
WATERVILLE – Chris Hofmann had three goals and two assists to power Amherst College to an 11-4 win over Colby in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
The Lord Jeffs (4-1) led 4-1 after the first quarter and 6-2 at the half. Hofmann had two goals and an assist as Amherst scored all three goals of the third quarter.
Ryan Scott led the Mules (1-4) with three goals. Tim Brown had one goal and an assist.
Goalie Cushing Donelan had nine stops and allowed just two goals in 55 minutes of work. Jeff Miller made 13 saves for Colby in the loss.
Women’s lacrosse
Trinity 12, Bowdoin 8
HARTFORD, CONN. – Trailing 3-0 early in the first half, Trinity College scored seven goals to take control of the game as it handed Bowdoin College a 12-8 setback in women’s lacrosse action.
Beatrice Gratry scored six times and Lauren Maslinowski added a hat trick to lead the Bantams (6-0) to their sixth win of the season to remain unbeaten.
The Polar Bears’ (5-1) Bridget Keating scored a pair of goals in the loss.
Colby 14, Wesleyan 6
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – With New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick in attendance, the ninth-ranked Colby College women’s lacrosse team took a commanding 14-6 win from 14th-ranked Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.
Belichick was watching his daughter, Amanda, play for Wesleyan.
Senior co-captain Emma Miller had four goals and two assists to lead Colby, which only led 6-5 at halftime. First-year midfielder Lauren Barrett also had four goals, while Elizabeth Ghilardi added two goals and two assists.
Catherine O’Brien made 14 saves in net for the Mules (6-1) for her sixth win of the season.
