WORCESTER, Mass. – Kate Dickinson and Lauren Forgues, members of the Maine Racewalk Association, competed in a 3,000-meter racewalk demonstration at Holy Cross on Saturday.
Holy Cross invited open and collegiate racewalkers to compete in the demonstration at the beginning of its invitational meet with Assumption College, the University of Hartford, the University of Maine, and the University of Vermont.
Ann Whalen, a freshman at Holy Cross and holder of the 3,000-meter racewalk record there at 16:03, was the featured local racewalker.
Right from the start, Kate Dickinson (South Berwick), a sophomore at the University of Maine at Farmington, took the lead and set a blistering pace for all three competitors. Boothbay’s Lauren Forgues quickly moved in to second place and closed on the lead for several laps, but then settled into what would still become another personal best time for her. All three walkers set personal records, and Whalen broke her own Holy Cross record she set just a short time ago.
Dickinson took the gold medal with a time of 14:25.45, followed by Forgues, who will be representing the United States in the Pan American Jr. Racewalk Cup competition in Lima, Peru, in just two weeks, with a time of 14:56.23. Third place went to Whalen with a 26-second improvement on her personal record, finishing in 15:36.01
