BABSON PARK, Mass. — Elyse Colby scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning to lead Endicott College to a dramatic 6-5 victory over the University of Maine-Farmington in the New England Region of the NCAA Division III softball tournament.
The loss eliminated the Beavers from the tourney.
With the score tied at 5-5, Colby singled to lead off the seventh and came around to score on an errant throw that went deep into the right-field corner.
Robyn Savitske went the distance for Endicott (34-3-1) to earn the win, allowing five earned runs on 13 hits and striking out 14 batters. Colby finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Finding itself trailing 5-3, UMF (19-14) battled back to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth. Mary Berry led off with a triple and later scored on an RBI double by Brandi Rideout. Rideout then advanced to third on Kelly McDonough’s infield hit and scored on a clutch two-out single by Holly Tripp.
McDonough finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Rideout was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Meagan Carman suffered the loss for UMF, despite allowing no earned runs in four innings of relief.
Baseball
Maine, Northeastern split doubleheader
ORONO – The University of Maine split a doubleheader with Northeastern, losing the opener 5-2 before coming back with a 13-7 decision in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Black Bears (28-15) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Joel Barrett singled to left to score Ray Vallee. But the Huskies (21-20) evened things up in the top of the seventh, and scored three more runs in the eighth.
Greg Creek added a solo home run in the ninth for the Black Bears.
There were a few more fireworks in the nightcap. The Huskies got things started with a four-run first inning. Maine answered with five runs in the bottom of the second inning, including a double by Joe Hough that plated Creek and Vallee for a 5-4 lead.
Though the Huskies tied the game in the third and took a brief 7-5 lead in the fourth, the Black Bears rallied for another six runs.
Women’s lacrosse
Bowdoin 16, Stevens 9
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Colleen McDonald was dominant for Bowdoin early in the game and scored a team-high five goals to lead the Polar Bears to a 16-9 win over Stevens Institute Saturday afternoon.
The win advances Bowdoin to the NCAA Div. III regional finals.
Trailing 5-3, Stevens scored a pair of goals to tie the game at five with 5:34 left in the first half. Valerie Barnhart scored her game-high sixth goal of the game for the Ducks (15-3) with 1:41 remaining in regulation.
Bowdoin went on a four-goal tear in the waning minutes of the first half to take a 9-5 lead into intermission, and picked up where they left off with five of the first six goals in the second half to take command.
Five different players scored during the run, including McDonald’s fifth and final goal of the game.
