For the second straight day, the Eastern Maine Class A baseball final between Edward Little and Oxford Hills was postponed due to rain Thursday, and the teams are getting a little tired of the holding pattern.
The game was rescheduled to 5 p.m. today at Morton Field in Augusta. The state championship game is still scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday at the same site. Western A champion Westbrook awaits the winner of today’s game.
The delays have made for a fitting ending to the 2005 season, which for many teams consisted of more postponements than any time in recent memory.
“It’s like the rest of the season. We’ve kind of gone through this before – Are we gonna play tomorrow? Are we gonna play tomorrow?'”, Edward Little coach Scott Annear said.
He said he e-mailed his coaching staff looking yesterday for new indoor drills to put his players through so practice wouldn’t get too monotonous.
“The kids have been great about knowing that they’ve got to do the work,” he said. “I think they’re tired of hearing the same broken record, me saying We’re going to hit. We’re going to take some grounders.’ But since it’s happened three days in a row, they have the plan right down.”
The ground was dry enough for the Eddies to take some fly balls outside yesterday, which was a welcome relief, Annear said. Pitchers have been keeping loose by doing some long toss and working on some drills, and hitters have benefited from some extra time in the batting cage.
While there was little to no rain in the Lewiston-Auburn area around game time, Annear said it was tough to second-guess the MPA on its decision not to play yesterday based on what the weather and field conditions were like in Augusta.
